The Thailand Bar Girl...and Tales of a Prodigal Path

I'll admit that I was a victim of the Bangkok bar girl scene myself. I was flat out, no holds barred hooked. I ate the bait, the hook, line and sinker.

As you walk down certain streets in Bangkok you can hear a hot Thai girl yell out, "hey sexy man" or even have Thai bar girls pulling on your arm to join them inside the bar for a few drinks. I thought, wow! women are actually interested in me! This is not normal in the States.

My Thailand bar girl journey started on my first vacation visit to Thailand. I knew it would be different but I didn't know just how different.

When I first arrived from the old Don Muang Airport in Bangkok I picked up a taxi from the standard tourist area (which in hindsight was the first of my mistakes) and had the driver take me to Hotel Novotel Bangkok Lotus down on Sukhumvit Road soi 33. The driver seemed friendly and nice alright and got me to my hotel fine but that's where the problem started.

He said the fare was 2500 Thai baht for the taxi ride. I had no idea how much it should cost but I had a huge feeling this was not right. I started to argue but I could tell he wouldn't budge on the price. However, he did look very nervous. I decided not to argue since it was my first time in Thailand and had no idea what would happen if I persisted. He threw my bags out on the street a block from the hotel and took off. I now know why he looked nervous and dropped me off a little ways from the hotel; because if I would have told the hotel staff what happened then they would have turned the taxi driver into the police.

I brushed off the incident, put my bags into my nice room and decided to hit the town. The only place I really heard of was Nana Disco so I told the next cab driver and we were off. A few minutes later I arrive at Nana and can't believe how many women I see around this place. It's 12:30 am and people everywhere.

I barely make it to Nana Disco with all the women outside the club distracting me. Once inside Nana and before my eye can adjust to the new surroundings I see even more hot Thai girls all packed into this Disco. I mean the ratio of women to men must have been 5 to 1! Men where hard to find! I was a kid in a candy store.

I got a drink at the packed bar and squeezed my way through the crowd closer to the dance floor. Every hot Thai girl trying to get my attention until finally I see this beautiful tiny 90 lbs half Thai, half Indian girl dancing right up next to me. That was it, my attention was zoned in and I saw hearts in my eyes.

I was thinking love but I soon found out she had other things on her mind.

We left the club and went out for karaoke and late night dinner. I told her I was from California but she had no clue where that was, then I said America and it looked like lights went off in her head (jack pot lights that is). We eventually made it back to the hotel where she promptly asked, "how much u give me?" I'm thinking hey this is a perfect night, we are in love why ask about money. But then I thought well she's probably poor and does need money so then I said the worst thing ever, "up to you". Basically I just gave her an open check book. She beamed from ear to ear and I didn't hear anything about money until days later.

I woke up in my hotel one morning and I see this girl going through my pants and luggage bags and says to me, "you only have 8,000 baht I need more". I thought wow! Ok, well I guess we can go to the atm. Off we went I gave her even more money then we went shopping! She wanted a gold bracelet costing about 2500 baht from MBK. I thought why not I'm on vacation and this lady really cares about me, LOL!

Well this went on for awhile until I found out that she had actually sold the love bracelet I bought for her to buy a T.V. for her dad. This was my wakeup call and this was when I finally decided to leave this girl.

After I had time to reflect on my first engagement with Bangkok I thought... between the taxi and the girl I must have had sucker tattooed on my forehead.

I swore after I left this Bangkok bar girl behind that things would be different and I would do better. But to avoid being taken advantage of I had to keep jumping from one Thailand bar girl to another, like a hot potato. If you held on to one bar girl too long, buzzz! Thanks for playing, now empty your pockets and prepare for headaches. However, jumping from one Bangkok bar girl to another comes with its own set of problems. You're too busy to get any real work done. Your work and business ideas get put off longer and longer until your original plans for Thailand get totally warped.

I finally had to use the Jaws of Life to detach myself from Thai bar girls.

Once I was out that scene for awhile I started to really see what was going on with the Thai culture. I didn't completely realize that kind of dating was not normal for Westerners in Thailand (of course you wouldn’t so this back home but I thought that this was the main choice I had in Thailand). You can actually date and have a relationship with a hot Thai girl who doesn't live in the bar. There are many, many Thai girls who have pretty normal lives that are interested in Westerners.

Also most of Thai society will look at you kind of cross and low class by walking around with an obvious Bangkok Bar girl hanging on your arm. They won't say anything as that is typical Thai culture but believe me they think it.

I relate the Thailand bar girl scene to the story of Pinocchio. Remember the scene where all these boys go to Pleasure Island to have as much unmonitored fun as they possibly can? Well, yeah sure it's all fun and games in the beginning but sooner or later you turn into a jackass!

It really does lose its luster after awhile with the Thai bar girls asking the same choppy questions over and over again, "hi sexy man... what u name? where u come from?" Pretty soon you'll start to think, if I have to answer one more of those questions again I'll lose it!

The definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. I've seen real old guys wheeled into these Go-go bars with oxygen masks on and a tank sitting next to them. You got to wonder you know.

If you really want to be a part of Thailand and only go to the Bangkok bar girl clubs then you'll never truly know or understand Thailand.

How do Thai girls become Bangkok Bar Girls?

Well many of them, not all, come from the country side looking to do normal work like making clothes or working in a restaurants but get lured into the wilder side mostly by friends for one reason or another until finally they are an official Thailand bar girl. Now not all the Thai bar girls work in Go-go Bars, some work as dancers or entertainers in an upscale gentlemen’s club (those women are usually born in Bangkok vs country side), some just sit in a bar fine establishment until someone pays their bar fine for the day, others are complete free lancers going to normal clubs or bars to find a date.

A few Thailand bar girls have even taken freelancing to a whole other level and capture the hearts of rich men around the world and jet set all over the place. There is a saying with expats in Thailand and it goes like this, you can take the girl out of the bar but you can't take the bar out of the girl. Once you understand that you will do much better.

Also please understand and don't get me wrong. Just because you met a Thai girl in a normal bar or club doesn't mean that she is any of the above. It just maybe that is a good woman who is going out with her friends from a real job and wants to have fun. She may not even want to go but her friends take her, put some drinks in her and she's off. There really are some good morale, even hot Thai girls to date that are really good catches in the normal bar or club on occasion. How do you find out if they truly are good hearted? By getting to know them and that takes time.
